Henry F. Owens, Inc. "Owens Movers," was founded
in 1927 by Henry F. Owens, Jr., the youngest of eighteen children
of a blacksmith. At the age of thirteen, Henry would rush
to the ports of Boston with his siblings, friends, and a two-wheeled
cart, and move Irish and Italian immigrants to their new homes
in Boston. Unknown to him, this was the beginning of his career.
With a will to succeed and a drive to make money, at the
age of sixteen, Henry told his father he had found a way to
make money and asked to borrow $50 to purchase a horse and
buggy. With this purchase, Henry started hauling coal and
ice from Boston's piers to Cambridge.
A few years later, Henry expanded the company into a household
mover, moving pianos, and taking on the toughest jobs possible.
Henry moved pianos for Arthur Fielder at Symphony Hall, Tanglewood,
as well as Raytheon's first microwave oven.
Today, Henry's, youngest son, Ed has taken over the company expanding it from a household mover into one of the largest commercial moving companies in Boston and among one of the largest minority employers in the state.
